Richie Kotzen

Richie Kotzen is one of those musicians who quietly embarrasses everyone else by being exceptional at too many things at once — blazing guitar technique, a soulful voice that belongs somewhere between rock and R&B, and the songwriting instincts to pull it all together into something genuinely his own. He burst onto the scene through Shrapnel Records as a teenage shred prodigy out of Reading, Pennsylvania, then raised eyebrows when he joined Poison in '91, which felt like casting a jazz pianist in a pop-punk band. His tenure with Mr. Big later in the decade showed his range even more clearly. What I keep coming back to is the solo catalog — over 20 albums deep, consistently underrated, the kind of body of work that makes you wonder why he isn't talked about in the same breath as the all-time greats.
