My Take
I have a soft spot for the people who build cinema from behind the scenes, and Robert Kurtzman is exactly that figure. A special effects makeup artist who also directs, writes, and produces, he co founded KNB EFX, which earned an Emmy, then struck out with his own companies. To me, the artisans who give monsters their weight and texture by hand are the real magicians of film. The 2002 Sitges award for special effects only confirms his standing. I often admire these craftsmen more than the actors who get the spotlight.
