My Take
Robyn Malcolm strikes me as the embodiment of New Zealand's quiet acting strength. From a soap nurse to the fierce matriarch of a working-class family, she has specialised in women who hold households together against the odds, and her 2019 Order of Merit speaks to how cherished she is at home. What I admire is her refusal to sanitise these roles; she lets the grit and ordinariness of real life seep into her performances. With work across Australia too, she has built a grounded, durable career. She is, to my mind, exactly the kind of character actor a screen industry depends on.
