My Take
Joachim Kühn reminds me that music laughs at borders. Born in Leipzig in 1944, he came out of what became East Germany, trained with classical rigor, then threw himself into jazz, even picking up the saxophone and composing along the way. He simply refuses to stay in one genre's cage. That he is still at the keyboard past eighty is humbling on its own. To me jazz is the sound of freedom being improvised in real time, and there is something almost poetic about a man from a divided city spending an entire life playing exactly that. I'll take that lifelong stubbornness over any trophy.
