Joachim Björklund

Joachim Björklund appeals to me precisely because his job was thankless. A six-foot-one centre back from Växjö, Sweden, he anchored the back line, the unglamorous spot where mistakes are punished and good work goes unnoticed. Strikers get the headlines; I admire the defenders who read the game and snuff out danger before it forms. It feels fitting that he now serves as head coach at IFK Göteborg, because a career spent reading attacks translates naturally into mentoring. To me he embodies a very Swedish kind of steadiness, the dependable professional who holds everything together from behind.
