Ruud Krol

Ruud Krol earns my deep respect as a living witness to Dutch Total Football. Born in Amsterdam in 1949, he spent most of his career at his hometown club Ajax and earned 83 caps for the Netherlands. As a defender who pushed forward, he embodied the fluid, position-blurring philosophy that reshaped the sport. After retiring he moved into coaching and was even honored as a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau. I have always loved football that defies fixed roles, and Krol stood at the heart of the era that proved it could work. I only wish I could have watched his elegant 184 cm defending live.
