My Take

Ryan Coogler is one of the most exciting filmmakers of his generation, and what impresses me is his refusal to choose between scale and substance. The Oakland native exploded out of Sundance with Fruitvale Station, reinvented a franchise with Black Panther, and keeps pushing into bold new territory with films like Sinners. A Time 100 honoree before forty, he proves you can command blockbuster budgets without surrendering your voice or your roots. He smuggles real social weight inside crowd-pleasing entertainment, which is the hardest trick in the business. As long as directors like Coogler sit near the center of Hollywood, I feel genuinely optimistic about where movies are headed.
