Sa Dingding is one of the boldest voices to come out of China in my book. Born in Pingdingshan with Han and Mongol roots, she refuses to treat tradition as a museum piece. Instead she fuses folk textures with electronic production and sings in Mandarin, English, Tibetan, and even an invented language meant to convey raw emotion over literal meaning.
