My Take
Sa Dingding is one of the boldest voices to come out of China in my book. Born in Pingdingshan with Han and Mongol roots, she refuses to treat tradition as a museum piece. Instead she fuses folk textures with electronic production and sings in Mandarin, English, Tibetan, and even an invented language meant to convey raw emotion over literal meaning. I respect that gamble enormously. It would be safer to stay legible, but she trusts sound itself to carry feeling across borders.
