Satoshi Fukuoka

Satoshi Fukuoka is the kind of local politician whose whole career is rooted in one place: born in Miyoshi in 1975, captain of the Koryo High School baseball team, five terms on the city council, and mayor since 2019. Winning that first mayoral race by just 302 votes against the incumbent says a lot about how hard-fought local politics can be. He came of age right as Japan's bubble economy was bursting, so if anything shaped his worldview, it was probably that era of economic whiplash and national soul-searching. I respect politicians who build their careers from the ground up in their own hometown.
