My Take

Balkan pop has a pull on me that is hard to explain, that bittersweet blend of ache and fire in the phrasing, and Selma Bajrami sits right at the heart of it. Coming out of Tuzla, she debuted in 1998 and exploded through the 2000s into one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's defining voices, with nine albums to her name. I find it moving that a region marked by so much hardship keeps producing singers who can stir a crowd this deeply. She still runs her own site and social channels, the mark of an artist with staying power. I would happily lose an evening to her catalogue.
