My Take
What draws me to Shigeharu Aoyama is the order in which he did things. The usual Japanese route is to win office first and become a television face afterwards; he ran it backwards, working as a journalist, then inside a think tank, then building a national profile as a commentator, and only after all of that going out to win a seat himself. Moving from the person who judges politicians to the person being judged takes a particular kind of nerve. He sat in the House of Councillors from 2016, then switched to the House of Representatives in 2026, in his seventies — trading a calmer chamber for the one with harder elections at an age when most people wind down. Whatever you make of his politics, and opinions on them run strong in both directions, the commitment to arguing in public has never wavered.
