Shinya Matsuyama

Relief pitching is the least romantic job in baseball. Starters get the storylines, closers get the final out, and the men who bridge the middle innings tend to vanish from the record. Shinya Matsuyama, born in 2000, refused to vanish: he pitched his way to the league award for best relief pitcher while handling the ugliest innings for the Chunichi Dragons. Then he moved to closer and became the first former developmental-draft player to lead the league in saves, with 46, tying the Central League record. He comes in, retires the side, walks back to the bench, and does it again the next night. In a sport that increasingly sells personality, there is something clarifying about a young arm whose entire argument is the scoreboard.
