Shoichi Funaki

Shoichi Funaki has had the kind of career I find quietly impressive. He went from in-ring competitor to WWE's Japanese-language commentator and interpreter, which means he reinvented himself as a bridge between cultures rather than fading out. Surviving and staying useful in American wrestling, far from home, takes real adaptability. I don't think the spotlight is the only measure of success in this business. The people who translate one country's wrestling to another, who keep the connection alive behind the scenes, deserve more credit. Funaki strikes me as a grounded professional who found a lasting role on his own terms.
