My Take

Rhimes essentially rewrote the rules of network television, and then did it again on Netflix. Grey's Anatomy became a cultural institution, but it is her instinct for propulsive, addictive storytelling, the famous gasp-inducing twists, that makes her work so distinct. She also reshaped who gets to be at the center of a prime-time drama, building richly diverse worlds before that was the norm. Her landmark Netflix deal and the Bridgerton phenomenon proved her vision travels. Whether you call it soap or prestige, the woman knows exactly how to make millions of people need the next episode. She is a genuine architect of modern TV.

Shonda Rhimes (born January 13, 1970) is an American television producer, screenwriter, and author from Chicago, Illinois. A Dartmouth College graduate, she created the hit series Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder, and her production company Shondaland later produced Bridgerton and Inventing Anna for Netflix. She is one of the most influential showrunners in television, honored with the Time 100 and an honorary CBE.
