Shun'ichi Kamiya

I'll be honest — when I first looked up Shun'ichi Kamiya, I didn't expect to find myself genuinely interested in an Aichi-born local politician, but here we are. The guy graduated from the University of Tokyo's economics faculty, which in Japan basically means you had the whole elite bureaucrat path laid out for you on a silver platter — and he walked that path at the old Ministry of Home Affairs, then made the less obvious choice to take his skills into city hall, first as a deputy mayor in Saga and Chiba and then as the elected mayor of Chiba City. There's something quietly admirable about that pivot. It would've been easy to stay comfortable in central government, but he apparently decided the local grind mattered more. Born in 1973, so he's been doing this long enough to know exactly how unglamorous the day-to-day really is — and keeps showing up anyway. That earns a nod from me.
