Shūta Ishikawa

Shuta Ishikawa has the career arc that Japanese baseball fans quietly love most. He came out of Soka University and entered the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks through the developmental draft, which in NPB means you are not even on the official roster yet. You are auditioning for the right to be a real professional. He won that fight, worked his way onto the main roster, and eventually led the Pacific League in wins. Then, on August 18, 2023, he threw a no-hitter. His signature pitch, the power curve, is a genuinely unusual weapon, and at 185 centimeters he throws it on a steep downward plane that hitters clearly hate. What I respect most is that none of this was inevitable. Developmental-draft players wash out constantly; almost none of them collect titles. He now pitches for the Chiba Lotte Marines, and the fact that he changed uniforms without changing his identity as a pitcher tells you something about how hard-won that identity was.
