My Take
Simon Schama is, to me, a model of what a public intellectual should be. Born in London in 1945, he leapt to fame with Citizens, his sweeping history of the French Revolution, then ranged freely across art, Dutch, Jewish and French history. What I value most is his refusal to lock scholarship in the ivory tower; through television he made dense history feel urgent and alive for ordinary viewers. Knight Bachelor, CBE, and still teaching at Columbia, he carries his honours lightly while staying genuinely passionate. We need more historians willing to translate deep learning into shared excitement.
