Sōma Uchiyama

At 172 cm, Sōma Uchiyama is small by professional baseball standards, and that is exactly why he is fun to watch. Born in Toyama Prefecture in 2002 and developed at Seiryo High School, he joined the Tokyo Yakult Swallows and announced himself in the loudest way available: a three-run home run to tie Game 2 of the 2022 Japan Series. There is no better stage in Japanese baseball, and he was barely twenty. What I like about that moment is how completely it ignores the usual scouting logic. Power is supposed to come from size. Uchiyama's does not, which means it comes from timing, bat speed, and a willingness to swing hard in a situation where most young players shrink. He is still early in his career, still versatile in where he fits on the field, and still very much unfinished. I find that more interesting than watching an established star. With a finished player you are confirming what you already know. With Uchiyama you are guessing, and the guessing is the pleasure.
