Soraya Esfandiari-Bakhtiari

Soraya Esfandiary-Bakhtiari's story moves me more than any film could. Famed for her beauty and married to the Shah of Iran, she was cast out in 1958 for being unable to bear an heir, discarded by the machinery of state for something entirely beyond her control. The cruelty of that still lands hard. What I respect is what came after: rather than vanish into exile as a footnote to a king, she tried to author her own life in European cinema. It rarely brought her the acclaim of her royal years, but the attempt itself reads as quiet defiance against a fate she never chose.
