Suresh Oberoi

Suresh Oberoi is exactly the sort of actor I champion: the indispensable character man who makes the lead look better. Coming up through radio and modelling before Bollywood, he built a career on voice and presence rather than vanity, and his National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor confirms the craft was real. Through the 1980s and 1990s he was a reliable fixture, the steady supporting weight that gives a film its texture. That his son Vivek carried the trade forward only deepens my appreciation. I have a soft spot for performers who anchor scenes from the side rather than the spotlight, and Oberoi is a fine example.
