Suyon Takayama

Suyon Takayama — honestly, that reading of the name caught me off guard the first time I saw it, which feels like a fitting introduction to someone who came up in Akita, a city defined by heavy snowfall and the kind of quiet toughness that place just seems to produce. He became Japanese welterweight champion in 2012, defended it six times, and retired in 2016 after 26 fights with only two losses — a fighter who just got in the ring and did the work. I find myself drawn to that. The name itself, written with characters suggesting a tree growing tall, makes me think of someone who built strength slowly and deliberately, the way you have to in a sport that doesn't forgive shortcuts.
