My Take
Sylvain Sylvain is one of those figures whose importance outweighs his fame. As a guitarist in the New York Dolls, he helped plant the seeds of glam and punk before either had a name. What strikes me is the unlikely arc: a kid born in Cairo who ended up shaping the gritty downtown sound of New York rock. He was rarely the loudest voice in the band, yet that steady, stylish guitar work was part of the glue. I have real affection for craftsmen like him, the ones history undervalues, and his 2021 passing deserves more than a footnote.
