My Take

Terry Southern is exactly my kind of writer: a satirist who smuggled subversion inside laughter. I love the sheer geography of his life, from postwar Paris to the Beats in Greenwich Village to Swinging London, all feeding a sharp, irreverent voice. Winning an O. Henry Award and a Hugo while also reshaping the substance of 1970s American film is a rare double life of literature and cinema. What I respect most is his refusal to be polite about hypocrisy. The best satire ages slowly, and I suspect Southern's barbs still draw blood today.
