Thomas Haden Church is the kind of actor I always root for: the scene-stealer who never hogs the frame. His washed-up, self-sabotaging buddy in Sideways earned a pile of critics' awards and an Oscar nod, deservedly so, because he found the ache underneath the comedy. Then he will swing to blockbuster villainy as Sandman in Spider-Man 3, only to return years later in No Way Home, proof of a quietly durable career.
