My Take
Timothy Busfield is the kind of actor I find myself defending in conversations about who really makes good television work. From Poindexter in Revenge of the Nerds to Elliot in Thirtysomething, which won him a 1991 Emmy, to reporter Danny Concannon on The West Wing, he specializes in characters who feel lived-in rather than written. What deepens my respect is the parallel career behind the camera, producing and directing, learning the whole machine. Field of Dreams gave him one of cinema's quietest great moments as the skeptic who finally sees. His filmography reads like a study in usefulness, and usefulness sustained over decades is its own kind of stardom.
