My Take
What I admire about Tom McCarthy is his refusal to grandstand. He is a filmmaker who treats restraint as a craft, and Spotlight proved that quiet, methodical storytelling can hit harder than spectacle. The fact that he started as an actor, popping up in everything from Meet the Parents to The Wire, gives his directing a rare empathy for performers. He understands a scene from both sides of the camera. To me, McCarthy represents the kind of unglamorous, durable talent that Hollywood often overlooks, yet whose films age remarkably well. I trust a director who lets the material breathe rather than shouting over it.
