Toni Basil

Toni Basil is too often filed away as a one-hit wonder for "Mickey," and I think that's a real disservice. What fascinates me is the breadth beneath that single chart-topper: she was a choreographer, dancer, director, and singer who shaped the visual language of music video and worked behind countless performances. Anyone can luck into a hit, but few sustain a creative career across decades the way she has, still active well into her eighties. I admire that quiet craftsmanship far more than the catchy hook everyone remembers. She's a builder, not a flash in the pan.
