My Take
Tony Esposito stands in a class of his own for me. The Sault Ste. Marie goaltender guarded the Chicago Blackhawks crease for fifteen seasons and, more importantly, helped pioneer the butterfly style that nearly every keeper uses today. A Calder Trophy, three Vezinas, and a Hall of Fame induction speak for themselves, and being Phil Esposito's brother makes them one of hockey's great families. The crease is the loneliest spot on the ice, and surviving it for that long demands extraordinary nerve. He passed in 2021, but the way he taught the world to stop pucks lives on.
Overview
Anthony James "Tony O" Esposito (April 23, 1943 – August 10, 2021) was a Canadian-American professional ice hockey goaltender, who played 16 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL), 15 of those for the Chicago Blackhawks. He was one of the pioneers of the now popular butterfly style. Tony was the younger brother of Phil Esposito, a centre.
