My Take
Tōru Takemitsu (1930–1996) is, to my ear, the composer who connected Japanese music to the wider world without flattening either side. Born in Tokyo and largely self-taught, he ended up with the Grawemeyer Award for composition, France's Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, and the domestic Otaka Prize — a rare case of a musician the international circuit refused to treat as a regional curiosity. What impresses me isn't the prize list, though. It's that he never sounded like someone imitating European modernism to earn a seat. He was admired for his handling of timbre, and that word undersells it: he treated the color of a sound, its decay, and the silence after it as compositional material in their own right. That instinct doesn't come out of a textbook. He also wrote extensively for film, which kept his work in contact with ordinary listeners. People brace for difficulty and then find the music oddly easy to inhabit. He died at 65, which still reads as far too early.
