My Take
Toshiko Takeya was born on 30 September 1969 in Shibetsu, Hokkaido, studied at Soka University, qualified as a certified public accountant, and now sits in Japan's House of Councillors representing Tokyo as the leader of Komeito. Her 2010 debut is the detail I find striking: she took 13.2 percent of the vote in the Tokyo district, the second-highest share in that race, arriving from outside the usual political pipeline. The accountancy background is what interests me most. Legislatures everywhere are full of people fluent in rhetoric and thin on balance sheets, and the unglamorous work — auditing how public money was actually spent, questioning line items nobody campaigns on — needs someone who can read the numbers without a briefing. That kind of expertise rarely wins headlines and almost never wins votes. Getting from eastern Hokkaido to a Tokyo seat is a long road, and she seems to have walked it on competence rather than noise.
