Toshio Tamogami

He climbed from Tamuramachi in Fukushima through Asaka High School and the National Defense Academy to the very top of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, serving as Chief of Staff from March 2007. Then, at the end of October 2008, he was dismissed over an essay he had written. That is the part I keep turning over. Most people who reach the summit of a large institution learn to say less; he lost the chair for saying more. Afterward he moved into political activism and military commentary. Opinion on his views is sharply divided and I am not going to try to settle that here. What is not in dispute is that he staked his position on his own words.
