My Take
Trey Anastasio is, for my money, one of the most fascinating creative engines in American music. As the co-founder and lead guitarist of Phish since 1983, he is credited with composing 152 original songs, a staggering output that hints at a restless musical mind. What fascinates me is his refusal to play anything the same way twice; each show becomes its own improvised universe, a philosophy that feels almost defiant in our streaming-and-replay age. His Goddard College training adds a theorist's rigor beneath all that spontaneity. I love that tension in his work, where careful composition and fearless improvisation share the same stage.
