Tsutomu Wakamatsu

Tsutomu Wakamatsu was born April 17, 1947, in Rumoi, Hokkaido, came out of Hokkai High School, and spent his playing career with the Yakult Swallows before returning to the club as a coach and later manager. He is 168 cm tall. In professional baseball, then or now, that is small — and he batted left, threw right, and hit his way into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame anyway. The Swallows retired his number 1, which is the sort of honour a franchise does not hand out for sentiment alone. The part I find genuinely instructive is how he did it. He was not overpowering anybody. He survived on contact, plate discipline, and craft, in an era with none of the modern training and analytics infrastructure that helps smaller players optimise their edge. He then made the harder second transition into management, which plenty of great hitters never manage. We talk about athletic potential almost entirely in terms of size now. Wakamatsu is a useful reminder that the measurement was always incomplete.
