My Take
Tyson Beckford basically rewrote what a male supermodel could be. When I think of 1990s fashion, his Ralph Lauren Polo campaigns are right there at the front of my mind, proving men could command the same fame and contracts the female icons of that era enjoyed. Out of the Bronx with Jamaican-American roots and a striking 188-centimeter presence, he then crossed into hosting Bravo's Make Me a Supermodel and into acting. What I admire is the longevity and reinvention. Plenty of models burn bright and vanish; Beckford built a lasting brand and stayed culturally relevant well beyond the runway.
Overview
Tyson Beckford (born December 19, 1970) is a Jamaican-American model and actor best known as a Ralph Lauren Polo model. He was also the host of both seasons of the Bravo program Make Me a Supermodel. Beckford has been described as one of the most successful male supermodels of all time, achieving fame and huge contracts similar to the female models who had huge success in the 1990s.
