Valerie French

Valerie French belongs to that vanishing class of mid-century English players whose names slip from memory even as their films survive. Born in London in 1928 and active from 1954 across both stage and screen, she worked in an era when an actor earned a living by sheer craft rather than algorithmic fame. I find something poignant in performers like her: the spotlight has moved on, yet the celluloid keeps her exactly as she was. I'd happily dig up one of her old pictures, because I suspect the discipline of that generation's stagecraft rewards a patient viewer more than most modern fare does.
