Verdine White

Verdine White is the kind of musician who proves the low end is the soul of a band. As a founding member and bassist of Earth, Wind & Fire, he laid the foundation that lets all those horns and harmonies soar, and Rolling Stone ranking him No. 19 among the greatest bassists ever feels earned. But what I love isn't just the playing, it's the showmanship: that leaping, electric stage presence. More than half a century in, he's still anchoring the groove, and that loyalty and stamina deserve as much praise as the chops.
