Víkingur Ólafsson

Víkingur Ólafsson is a pianist I return to whenever I want clarity. Born in Reykjavík, he carries something of Iceland's stark, luminous landscape into his playing, and his collaborations with the Berlin and New York Philharmonics confirm he sits among the world's finest. The 2022 Rolf Schock Prize was well earned. What moves me most is the paradox in his Bach: meticulous yet unexpectedly tender, intellectual yet never cold. He strikes me as a true poet of the keyboard, turning northern solitude into sound, and I suspect I'll be listening to him for decades to come.
