My Take

I find Viktor Orbán fascinating less as a politician than as a study in sheer endurance. A provincial lawyer who once played football, he climbed to the top of Hungarian politics and stayed there longer than almost any of his European peers. Whatever one thinks of his ideology, and opinions split sharply, that kind of staying power demands an instinct for timing and a tolerance for confrontation few leaders possess. My view is that history will judge the substance, but the tactician in him is undeniable. He reshaped an entire country's political landscape through patience and will, and that alone makes him worth studying carefully.

Overview

Viktor Mihály Orbán (born 31 May 1963) is a Hungarian lawyer and politician who served as the prime minister of Hungary from 1998 to 2002, and 2010 to 2026. He has also been the president of Fidesz, which has been variously characterised as a Christian nationalist, illiberal, and far-right political party. He has served as its president since 2003, and previously from 1993 to 2000.
