My Take
To me, Vinnie Colaiuta sits near the summit of recorded drumming. From Brownsville, Pennsylvania to Berklee, he became the session player other musicians speak of in hushed tones, famous for sight-reading Frank Zappa's impossible charts. A Grammy winner and Hall of Famer, he moves between jazz, pop, and everything else without ego. What I find most compelling is how invisible his genius often is: you have heard his playing on countless records without knowing it. That willingness to serve the song rather than the spotlight is, for me, the mark of a true master.
