Wakatakakage Atsushi

Three brothers wrestling out of the same stable, Arashio, is unusual enough on its own. What draws me to Wakatakakage specifically is the size. At 183 cm he is not big by top-division standards, and yet he reached sekiwake, one rung below the sport's titled ranks. Sumo is often described by outsiders as a contest of mass, and that description is lazy, but it is not entirely wrong either. Reaching that level while giving away size means winning through position and technique rather than sheer force, and it makes his bouts legible in a way that pure power matchups are not. You can actually see the decisions being made. I also keep thinking about what training must be like in a stable where two of your brothers are also professional wrestlers. There is nowhere to hide and no one to impress with excuses. Whether or not that explains his stubbornness at the edge of the ring, it is the version of the story I find most convincing.
