My Take

Wilfredo Tovar is the kind of ballplayer I instinctively root for. Out of Miranda, Venezuela, he reached the majors with the Mets and Angels, then kept the game alive in the Mexican League with Yucatán. At 178 cm he is not built like a slugger, yet he has held down shortstop, the most demanding infield post, which tells me his glove and baseball IQ carried him. There is no glamour in bouncing between leagues to keep playing, but there is real devotion. I have endless respect for journeymen who chase the game itself rather than the spotlight; Tovar feels like a baseball lifer.
