My Take
Will Sharpe is the rare multi-hyphenate whose hyphens all feel necessary. Plenty of actors direct as a vanity project; Sharpe writes, directs, and performs as if each discipline were feeding the others. Earning a BAFTA nomination for Black Pond, a micro-budget debut, told me early on that he understood tone, that uncomfortable space between comedy and grief, better than most established filmmakers. His Japanese-British heritage gives his work a distinctive in-between quality, an outsider's precision about English awkwardness. I rate him as one of the most interesting creative minds of his generation in British screen culture, and I suspect his best directorial work is still ahead of him.
