My Take

William Sadler is exactly who I picture when someone says character actor. Buffalo-born, Cornell-educated, and forged on Broadway in Biloxi Blues, he built a career on being the indispensable supporting presence rather than the star. From The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile to Die Hard 2, and even playing Death himself in Bill & Ted, his range is absurd. What I love most is his restraint: he can steal a scene without ever hogging it. The Saturn and Clarence Derwent awards confirm the craft, but to me his real prize is being the quiet backbone of so many great films.
