My Take
For a long stretch of the pandemic, Yasutoshi Nishimura was the face on the screen, the minister who had to stand up and ask an entire country to stay home. Born in Akashi in 1962, schooled at Nada and the University of Tokyo, and trained inside the trade bureaucracy before entering politics, he is about as credentialed as Japanese public life allows. I have sympathy for that assignment: every decision he announced made somebody furious, since tightening kills businesses and loosening drowns hospitals. What complicates the picture is the ending. He left the trade and industry portfolio in late 2023 as a factional funding scandal engulfed his party. The party suspended his membership for a year, and in 2026 he was back as chairman of its Election Strategy Committee. Competence and trust are separate currencies.
