Yūji Nishino

Honestly, the Yūji Nishino career arc is one of those stories that feels almost unfair in how much it asks of one guy. He bursts onto the Lotte Marines scene in 2013 as a starter, looks like a genuine ace, and then gets shuffled into the closer role — where he promptly racks up 31 saves in his first season doing it, like, okay sure, no big deal. Then his elbow basically falls apart, he has Tommy John surgery in 2020, and most people quietly write him off. And then he just… comes back. Not just back, but back as a starter again after six years in relief, posting a 2.69 ERA in 2023 at 32 years old. That's not a comeback story, that's a full-on reinvention. The foregrip that he shapes into two distinct pitches depending on the count — that kind of craft obsession is what separates players who survive from players who thrive. A kid from Takaoka, Toyama who nobody expected to last this long. I'm rooting for him.
