My Take
What moves me about Yuki Kawauchi is not just the 2:08:37 he ran in Tokyo, but the conditions under which he did it. A full-time civil servant in Saitama, training on his own dime with no sponsor, he became the people's marathoner in an era of corporate teams and sports science. I find that almost defiantly old-fashioned, and deeply admirable. He proved that grit and consistency can stand toe to toe with funded systems. To me he represents a kind of purity that distance running sometimes loses, and I respect him more for refusing the easier, sponsored path.
