Yumi Adachi

Yumi Adachi has been famous since childhood, which is a much heavier inheritance than it sounds. Born in Tokyo's Taitō ward in 1981, she became a household name as a child actor in the 1990s — for an entire generation in Japan, a single line she delivered on television is still instantly quotable. The usual ending to that story is not a happy one: the audience freezes you at the age they first met you, and the work slowly dries up. She refused that ending. She kept acting into adulthood, taking stranger and more interesting parts than her sweet-child image would ever have permitted, and she is now, to my eye, a considerably more compelling performer than she was as a star child. Careers that merely survive early fame are rare. Careers that get better after it are rarer still, and that's the part worth respecting.
