Yumi Wakatsuki

Yumi Wakatsuki was born on 27 June 1994 in Fuji, Shizuoka, and her occupation field reads: actor, illustrator. That second word is the one I keep returning to. She came up through the idol system as a member of Nogizaka46 from 2011 to 2018 and moved into acting after leaving the group, which by now is a well-worn route. What is not well-worn is carrying a genuine second craft alongside the first. Illustration is not a hobby you list to seem interesting; it is a discipline with its own standards, and here it sits in the occupation field as part of what she actually does. I think that matters more than it looks. Performing careers are decided by other people: casting directors, producers, schedules, the mood of an industry that changes its mind every few years. Drawing is not. A performer who can also make something alone, at a desk, without anyone's permission, has a floor underneath her that most of her peers simply do not have. It changes what she can afford to turn down. She is in her early thirties, the stretch in this line of work where roles either deepen or dry up, and I have no idea which way it will go for her. I am not going to pretend otherwise. But if I were betting, I would take the person with two trades over the person with one.
