Yūsuke Inoue

Yūsuke Inoue belongs to a profession that does not really exist outside Japan in the same form: the owarai tarento, a comedian who works the stage, the variety panel, and the television studio all at once. Born in Tottori in 1980 and raised in Osaka, educated at Higashiyodogawa High School and Kobe Gakuin University, he took an ordinary path into an extremely unforgiving trade. In 2016 he was referred to prosecutors on suspicion of hit-and-run after his car struck a taxi; the case was dropped in 2017. What I appreciate about comedians in his position is that the skill is largely invisible. The visible half of a comedy duo gets the laugh; the other half chooses the exact word, in the exact fraction of a second, that makes the laugh possible. He has also been willing to be the target rather than the aggressor on variety shows, which sounds easy and is not. Staying employable in that world past forty is its own quiet achievement.
