Zhang Youxia

Zhang Youxia is one of those figures who operates almost entirely in the shadows of Chinese state power, yet whose position mattered enormously until his downfall in 2026 — as first-ranked vice chairman of the Central Military Commission under Xi Jinping, he was essentially the second-most powerful person in China's military hierarchy. Born into revolutionary aristocracy as the son of General Zhang Zongxun, his rise was shaped by both pedigree and a genuine career in the People's Liberation Army, including combat experience in the 1979 Sino-Vietnamese War. He's not a public-facing personality in any conventional sense — no speeches, no press conferences, no social media presence — just a methodical climb through the ranks that put him at the very top of an institution that controls the world's largest standing army. That kind of quiet, structural power is genuinely fascinating to me, even if — or maybe because — it's so opaque from the outside.
